Duck Slough Watershed
The Duck Slough Watershed includes many neighborhoods including: Thousand Oaks, Trinity Oaks, Wyndgate, Wyndtree, Chelsea Place, Oakridge, and others.
The watershed is 14.1 square miles in size with 10.1 square miles that flows through the Trinity, Thousand Oaks, Trinity Oaks, Wyndgate, Wyndtree, Chelsea Place and the Oakridge communities. The historic drainage flow is from East to West to the Anclote River and then to the Gulf of Mexico.
Due to flooding within the watershed, a task force was formed in September 2012. The task force membership consists of citizens, property owners, agency representatives and interested parties that have been affected by the flooding. The task force meets to discussed concerns, study and permit status, and maintenance activities. The meeting agendas and meeting summaries are available on-line.
Information on the Duck Slough Watershed, including the history, studies, design, permitting and construction activities that have taken place, are currently underway or proposed for future evaluation along with a summary of expenditures or committed monies in contained in the document "Overview of the Duck Slough Watershed" (PDF).
The Duck Slough Watershed contains numerous operable structures. At the current time, the operation of the structures is dependent on a manual reading of the water levels and then a manual operation of the structures. In the future, an automated recording and operational system known as SCADA is planned for installation.
The operation of the structures is guided by the conditions contained in the applicable Southwest Florida Water Management District permits. An exhibit depicting the structures and the operating schedule (PDF) is available. Water level readings are taken on a daily basis.
With the exception of BMP 1A (Seven Springs Blvd. just north of Mitchell Blvd.) and 6A Interim (Kinsmere Drive, eastern side), all of the gates have a gauge that has a red marker that indicates when the gate may be opened. The gates must be able to be opened from downstream to upstream. However, in the event that operational elevations have been exceeded in upstream areas only (BMP Nos. 8, 9 and 10), these upstream structures can be operated independently from the set of downstream structures.
BMP 1A is allowed to be open prior to a forecasted significant rain event and BMP 6A is normally left open prior to a rain event to drawdown the upstream wetland to create storage capacity in the upstream wetland.
