On average annually, Americans purchase and consume nearly three billion batteries to power up their portable electronic devices. Did you know that batteries should be removed from the solid waste stream? Batteries contain heavy metals and chemicals that can be released when landfilled or incinerated. Pasco County runs a battery recycling program. Blue 5 gallon collection buckets are located in 17 public locations including, government buildings and libraries.
To educate and encourage students to continue to participate in battery recycling, Pasco County staff and the District School Board of Pasco County staff, host battery recycling contests for students each year. In 2017 we recycled 39.57 tons of household batteries.
