SUBJECT: Public Hearing for the Law
Enforcement Block Grant

It is recommended that the data herein presented be
given formal consideration by the Board of County Commissioners.
DESCRIPTION AND CONDITIONS:
The Sheriff receives funding for various programs
through the Law Enforcement Block Grant.
This grant has been used to purchase laptop computers for the patrol
units, provide funds and assistance for child abuse/neglect cases, and other
uses.
On July 9, 2002, the Board approved an
application for Law Enforcement Block Grant funds of $248,687.00. The purpose of the grant is to purchase a
report-writing program that will enhance the Sheriff's COPS More Laptop
Program. The local match portion will be
$27,632.00 and is contained in the Sheriff's budgeted Reserves in the Fiscal
Year 2002-03 Budget. This application
was submitted online. As a requirement
for receiving this grant, a public hearing must be held to accept public input
on the use of these funds. At this time,
the Sheriff is requesting that the Board hold a public hearing on the Law
Enforcement Block Grant to receive the public's input on the use of these
funds.
The Sheriff advertised for a public hearing to be
held September 4, 2002.
ALTERNATIVES AND ANALYSIS:
1.
Hold a public
hearing at this time.
2.
Choose not to
hold a public hearing, jeopardizing the Sheriff's ability to secure these
grants.
RECOMMENDATION AND FUNDING:
The
Sheriff recommends that the Board approve Alternative No. 1 and hold the
public hearing on the Law Enforcement Block Grant so that public input may be
received.
It
is also requested that Secretarial Services send the annotated agenda to Connie
Cunningham, Sheriff's Office, so the grant files can show proof of the public
hearing.
No
additional funding is required at this time.
